Sliding Multiplications

Topic Progress:

The aim of this exercise is to revise and learn multiplications. Hover puck is a pleasant tool which helps with learning. A long corridor allows for a long sliding distance.

Variation ideas

  • A frisbee can be used in this activity. Attach the multiplication card on the frisbee.
  • Pupils can make paper planes. Tell the pupils how many throws the pairs should throw. One pupil writes a multiplication on the plane and throws it. The other pupil writes a product and a new multiplication and throws it back. The activity continues.
  • If you have a ball with holes, for example a bendable toy ball, pupils can put pieces of paper inside the ball. You write, or the pupils write, multiplications and their answers on the pieces of paper before the activity. One pupil puts a multiplication inside the ball and rolls the ball to the other pupil. He/she puts the answer paper inside the ball and rolls it back.

Assessment

Take notes about the pupils’ numeracy.

After the activity, give the pair a pen and a paper sheet. Both of the pupils write on the paper how they felt about the activity and their own ability to solve the equations. You can give them examples:

  • It was fun.
  • It was hard.
  • I did well.
  • I thought about the answers for too long.

When the pupils have written their self-assessment on the sheet, they attach it on the hover puck and slide it to you.
