Welcome to Time course 1!

This course is part of the Finnish Active Learning´s Maths Schoolbag. The course provides ideas to the preschool teachers and class teachers for active teaching and learning in mathematics. You can modify the ideas in this course, so they can be suitable for different time related exercises. The activity and interaction between the pupils are the central principle throughout the course.

When the pupils are learning about the concepts of time, combining the exercises with the children’s everyday lives helps with the learning process and motivates the pupils. Concrete and well-designed teaching equipment and techniques are very important. For example:

  • Training clocks
  • An analog clock and a digital one if needed
  • Different ways to illustrate the concepts of  ”past” and ”to”
  • Books, games, timers, and other additional material

There are some basic tips for learning.

  • Pupils practice counting to 60.
  • Pupils practice counting by fivers.
  • Discuss with the pupils about the general concepts of time related to their every day life, for example, in the morning, at noon, the length of a recess or a lunch break

The exercises of this course can be done in different ways. You can choose exercises that are fitting for your group and its goals to diversify the teaching during classes. The ideas can be used to learn completely new or revise the already learned. You can cooperate with the other adults. You can arrange a theme day or a week during which the pupils go through different activity stops. All of the exercises don’t have to be done immediately. Maths Schoolbag’s courses are like idea banks, from where you can choose different ideas every year.

Designers of the courses of Finnish Active Learning

We are classroom teachers Teija Kauppi MAT (The Master of Arts in teaching) and Eija Leskinen MAT, a theatre pedagogue and nonfiction author. We have trained teachers, day school teachers and activity directors. Active learning has been a part of our teaching for our whole teaching careers. We have noticed that it motivates and inspires pupils to learn. Learning a new skill becomes easier when it is done by playing and moving. We hope that our course would inspire and encourage more teachers to try active teaching methods. For those, who already use active teaching as one of their techniques, we would like to share new ideas that make each school day even more enjoyable. The name of our company is Ideareppu / Finnish Active Learning.

You can follow us on Instagram and Facebook. On Instagram use for the time of being our Finnish name ideareppu. The updates are in English, too.
