English Schoolbag – Secret forest (luonnos)

Magpies caw. Butterflies hover. Bats fly. Deep in the forest, the pupils learn and revise words, sentences and phrases of beginner´s English. Inspiring and endearing forest animals add pupils´ interest and motivation. Use of drama and empathizing improves memorising. It´s easy for the teacher to divide the entirety into multiple lessons by using some certain elements every time. The photographs, videos, printable materials and accurate instructions for the teacher ease the implementation of Secret Forest. The adventure also contains a presentation which highlights the use of drama and its benefits in language learning. Welcome to Secret Forest!

Welcome to Secret Forest!

Secret Forest is an active and memorable entity designed for varhennettu studying English. The students work together with the means of drama. The activity ideas can be done either inside or outside. On the Secret Forest journey, the students learn or revise the following themes:

  • presenting oneself
  • colours
  • numbers
  • animals of the forest and other animals
  • words related to the forest environment
  • greetings
  • vocabulary related to objects
  • body parts
  • food and drinks
  • adjectives and verbs

Many lessons contain a presentation, which can be used in learning or revising vocabulary related to the topic.

The functional skills also include other central factors relating to language learning, such as hearing and reading comprehension, simple sentence structures, and encouragement to speak in English.

Secret Forest is a whole, but it can be implemented in parts. The parts form a whole by using a few similar elements each time:

  • animal headbands
  • the gate into the Transformation Room
  • the gate into the secret forest

If you use other props, leave it visible if possible. It will keep the students tied up in the drama even when they do not have an English lesson.

THE MATERIAL MUST NOT BE SHARED. IT IS ONLY ACCESIBLE TO LICENSE HOLDERS.

Designers of the Finnish Active Learning courses

We are class teachers Teija Kauppi, Master of Arts (Education), and Eija Leskinen, Master of Arts (Education), a drama educator and a non-fiction writer. We have trained teachers as well as club instructors in active teaching in different workshops. Action-based learning has been a part of our pedagogy for our entire teaching careers. It motivates and enthuses students to learn. The adoption of new ideas is made easier when it happens through playing and moving. We hope that our course inspires and encourages more and more teachers to try some action-based teaching methods. For those for whom activity is already a part of their teaching, we want to share new ideas for cheering up the school days.
