Contents of the course

On this course, we first present the contents of the English courses and the world of Finnish Active Learning. The theme of Course 3 of English Schoolbag is food, drinks, kitchen utensils, and situations and places related to dining. Firstly, you can familiarise yourself with the structure and basic principles of this course.

Co-teaching/Simultaneous teaching is strongly featured in the unit of teaching food-related themes. The printable games, cards, and other materials of this course are compiled in the Material Pocket. The printable cards are suitable for many of this course’s activity ideas and can also be used in the activities of other English Schoolbag courses or the realisation of one’s own activity ideas. If you laminate the cards, they become more durable and stand up to moisture in outside use as well.

The chapter “Forming pairs and groups” gives you tips for the formation of activity groups. The ideas of the course can be applied in other subjects and on the lessons of other languages as well. Versatile methods and activity ideas enthuse and motivate students to broaden their vocabulary and use the language.

Designers of the Finnish Active Learning course

We are class teachers Teija Kauppi, Master of Arts (Education), and Eija Leskinen, Master of Arts (Education), a drama educator and a non-fiction writer. We have trained teachers as well as club instructors. Action-based learning has been a part of our pedagogy for out entire teaching careers. We have observed that it motivates and enthuses students to learn. The adoption of new ideas is made easier when it happens through playing and moving. We hope that our course inspires and encourages more and more teachers to try some action-based teaching methods. For those for whom activity is already a part of their teaching, we want to share new ideas for cheering up the school days.
